Artist Managment
What is the role of a artist manager?
P2 - Describe
In the music industry bands and artists will get managers to handle the business side of their career. The business manager will act as a representative of the musician/band. Managers will make sure that the artist is getting the maximum potential income from there live performances and they will make sure that the band/artist gets as many gigs as possible. An artist’s manager will guide the band in the right direction and help them to be successful in the music industry. A manager’s job will consist of getting in touch with a variety of different people who can help the band. These people are people like: booking agents, promoters, publicists and A&R guys. It is very important that manages have good contacts because if they don’t have good contacts they cannot offer and thing to the band in regards to getting them to places that they can’t get without a manager. The manager will be the point of contact for the band/artist. They will be the person that people get in touch to ask for the band to play at certain venues or if someone wants to use a piece of music in an advert or a film. The manager will have looked after all of the business interests for the band/artists. The manager will oversee all of the contracts that the Artist signs and will advise them for or against each one and explain the pros and cons to make sure the artist makes the best decision in regards to he or she or there musical career. The manager will look out for record labels and publishers and publishers who want to exploit the band and only want to make
money of them and who don’t actually care about the bands actual careers.

M2 - Explain
A manager’s job is to guide a band/artist through their career and help them to be as successful as possible. This means that they will advise you on important decisions you will have to make in regards to you career. This might be them advising you for or against signing a deal will a particular record company or any other kind of contract that you will be contractually forced to follow once you have signed it. The manager will help you to negotiate the best deal possible when you are signing a contract, they will be very good at this because it is there job and because it is in their best interest to make you as an artist the most money you can possibly make because they as a manager get a cut
of what you make as an artist.
The manager does will get the artist/band lots of gigs and live performances so that the artist has a chance to improve as a performer and so that they get a cut of what the band make. In order for the manager to get a gig for the artist they will have to get in touch with the person ho owns the venues or a booking agent and get them to find the artist either a headline slot or a supporting slot. As well as playing in real music venues the artist manager might get the artists jobs playing at weddings and at other big social events that pay very well for musicians. The artist managers will try their best to promote the band. This means that they would get in touch with all of their contacts who are in the
promotion industry. This means they would get in touch with people who write online articles on blogs or social networking sites about new and upper coming bands. The artist manager will also get in touch with some of the contacts who can promote them through columns in magazines and other things like that. It would be hard for a band or an artist to promote themselves successfully without a manager because the artist/band will not have the same amount of experience in the music industry as the manager and because of this they will not have the
same amount of contacts. They will also talk to publicists. Publicists are basically people who can get some publicity for the artist in a few ways. It might be getting them a slot supporting a good band in a similar genre or it might some kind of social publicity.

There are lots of pros and there are also lots of cons when you are talking about being a Artist Manager as a career etc.. One of the things than is a pro and a con at the same time is the fact that artist managers get back more when the put more work in, but that's bad because it means if the artist manager is not going the extra mile to get the artist gigs then the artist manager s not gong to make much money. One of the biggest problems with being a artist manager is that you only can do so much in the music industry as a manage in regards to promoting and getting your artists shows because being a good artist manager means that yo hsve t hve lots and lots of contacts. So that means if you are a manager and you are relatively new to the music industry then you will find it very had to get your artists places because you are noting the circle and you don't know the right people yet.
My Research on Showcase - the international music business guide
I have gone on to a website called show case and had a look at
all of the artist management companies that work in the UK. I have put a list of some of the big names below this paragraph. As you can see in the screen shot to the right of this paragraph that the showcase website has a very wide range of all thing music industry related. I Have used this website to look up some of the artists that I enjoy listening to find out what management company’s they have signed contracts with. For example I have learned that one of my favourite bands called Biffy Clyro who are a rock band from Scotland has signed a management deal with a Scottish music management company called 1554 management. I have looked up the details of their management company and taken a screenshot witch is the bottom of the two pictures to the left of this paragraph. This website has helped me to understand the importance of having a manager if you want to progress as a musician and grow and increase a fan base and get a larger following. |
I have looked at a few other websites that have some of the bigger more successful artists signed to with management deals. One of the
websites that caught my eye was the Rocket Music. Rocket music is a music management company, I like the way that they have laid out there website because it shows that they are a successful music management company because they have good artists. As you can see in the screen shot next to this paragraph that this management company has signed a lot of big names including Ed Sheeran and Elton john and Lilly Allan and lots of other world famous artists that have been seriously successful with their music which means that the artist manager for them has just been reeking the benefits of their huge success. Here you can see and exsample of a contract a solo artist would agree to |

If you are an artist manager the roles you will have to take on
as a part of this job are as follows:
1. Manage all of the things that happen with the artist, things like booking rehearsals studios for practice, meetings, tour schedules and all public
performances and gigs.
2. Take on a role that is similar to that of a mother’s role. When you will guide the artist away from things that could get bad publicity and
making sure that nothing happens that will make it hard for the artist to write and produce music.
3. Take responsibility of appointing a solicitor to deal the all things to do with the legal side of the artist’s career. The artist manager will also have to deal with negotiating royalties and negotiating with record companies.
4. Build up the artists public profile by dealing with Press and TV inquierrys.
5. The artist manager will have to make the most for the artist out of all marketing opportunities and make sure that nothing damaging happens that could affect the artist.

thousand a year!
How do artist managers get money?
In most contractual agreements that are signed between managers and between the artists will state that the artists manager will get somewhere between15 to 20 present of the total income that the artist/band makes. That means that the managers of artists get a cut of all of the money you get paid for live shows and for gigs (the managers usually book you the gigs in the first place so that’s justifiable), they also get a cut of the money that you get paid from the record labels that stands as a personal advance against royalties, they will also get money from the sails of you merchandise and money from the royalties you get when you music is used in a advert or a TV show or a film, ect. This is good in some ways though because it means that tit is in the artist’s managers best interests to help the artists/band to generate as much money as possible.
