Know how technology affects music making and consumption in society
Development of technology
The developments with recording music -
Music has been being recorded for a long time but it was not always as simple and as easy to do as it is today with the use of technology. Music recording started with tape recording, they used to have to cut up piecces of tape and stick them bact together when they wanted to edit tracks. These days the digital recording technoligy has enabled us to do everything on the conputer and given us endles possibilitys in regards to edditing it. We can now kit out our homes with semi profesional reciording studios for a fairly cheap price.

More development
There has been so mutch development in instruments as well as in the things we have to record them. Take the guitar for example. The guitar was origenaly just a wooden iinstrument that had pig intestines as strings. However now we have electric guitars with pickups and we have a lot of them too! we have amplefiers for the guitars and we have Pa systems, Pa amplifires, passicve and active speakers. Microphones have also come on leaps and bounds and we now have amasingly sesitive microphonesthat pick up even the tinyest little sounds.

Vinyl to Cd to Online shops
Vinyl was the frost consumable product available for purchase by members of the public.
Cassette tapes
CDs and Vilnly's/hard copies of music
iPod and mp3 players
Ipods and mp3 players were a revolutionary invention in terms of technology and music effecting the users and listens Using ipods and mp3 players meant that music lovers could listen to all of there favourite music while they were on the move. It meant that they could carry your whole music library in your pocket. The younger generations have latched on to this asnd now in this country in this day and age it is hard to find a youth who dose not have a ipod or a mp3 player of some description for there music.
How has MP3 effected socioty, both music makers and music users -
Effect of mp3 on music listeners
The effect of mp3 on music listeners has been huge. It has revolutionized the industry as we used to know it. It has enabled people to listen to music online and to download music to their computers. It has also enabled people who enjoy listening to music the ability to use mp3 players. Mp3 players allow the music leisters to create play list of tall of their favourite music and then play it through a pair of headphones on a very portable device. This means that music lovers can always have music, no matter where they are
Effect of mp3 on music makers
The effect of mp3 on music makers has been very big. It has enabled people to bounce music in the format of mp3. This means that that music makers can listen to there bounces in high quality and can send there music in emails and have outer people download there music.
Vinyls compared to mp3
Vinyls and mp3s are two very different ways for people to listen to music. Vinyls are great because people love to have music collaboration and they love to have vinyls for the sentimental value of them. Where as mp3s are for listen to music on the computer. This as also great because of how easy it is to get. You can download it on your computer so you don't even have to leave the house to buy your music.
Pros and cons of Hard copies eg... cds, vinyl
Pros
The sentimental value they are nice to have coletors love them |
Cons
They need to have cd players / vinly players the younger generation aren't so keen |
Some of the affects that Technoligy has had on music.
Looking at how much technoligy has progressed over the years is outstanding. It has effected the writing of music, the recording of pusuc and the distrobusion of musi aswell as music itself. We now have acsess to MIDI setups. This menes we can use MIDI instrumenrts and control a wide varioty of sounds from our keybords plugged into our computer.
There has vbeen a lot of development in instruments, over the corse of time. For exsample guitar effecs units have been made. It is now easyer than ever to craft your own guitar tone from a glean tone useing phasers, flangers, chorus, reverb echo, ect.

The video below shows the guitar pedals and how they affect there live performance.
Explaining the effect of guitar pedals on music makers and music listeners
Through the use of guitar pedals it give music makers who are making music using guitar a lot more versatility with there instrument When you apply a lot of reverb to the guitar signal and then roll on with a volume pedal it creates the effect of a ambient washy synthesizer This would not be possible without guitar pedals. So guitar effect pedals have effected the music makers in a way that they are making sounds that don't sound like there guitar with there guitar.
The music listeners wont even know the different in some places, when there is a a guitar they will think it is a synth.

More of the effects of technology on the actual music.
A direct effect of some of the music is the invention of new sounds and as a chain reaction to that, the new genres that have emerged. I have taken the time to list some of the new genres that technology have made possible as well as mentioning some of the bands or groups that started the whole lot. eg. KRAFTWERK.
he picture below shows just have vast the amount of genres that have been created since the technology has been available.

Technology has vastly effected Techno Music --
Technology is such a huge part of the techno music genre. If there was not technology like we have then there would not have been any techno music because there would have been no means of witch to make it.
The picture that i have put on the right of this paragraph i think is a nice little reminder of how the tecno music is made. If you look you can see a man bathing himself in music equipment. The equipment he is in is the kit that is required to create techno music.. eg synthersises and midi interfaces. |
Abelton DJ Tech Tools compared with a DJ mixing with vinyls
In the videos below I have showed very clearly how the advance in technology has affected the way that music makers make music. It shows the advance in technology in kit that is used to play DJ sets. On the right you can see the DJ planing using vinyls This means that he has to bring two vinyl players and one mixer to every gig. And he had to bring all of his vinyls On the outer hand you can see the Ableton Mixing pad. This pad simply plugs into his laptop. It is so much easier to move around and transport because of its size.
How has this advance of technology effected the way the music is made?
Describing how
When you compare these two videos and look at how they are making the music you can see that the technology has enabled the DJ to play by simply pressing buttons. And there is no need to lug around all of the kit that he would always have to in the past.
Explaining how:
When using the able ton you can see that the pad has all sorts of different sound from each of the buttons. This is because using this sample pad you can program in what very sound you want to whatever button you want. You can see that there are a lot of buttons, this means that there are a lot of sounds that you can put in. So you can see how much versatility this small piece of kit has in comparison to the Vinyls.
In order to mix with vinyls you need, a lot of vinyls and two vinyl payers and of core the mixer and lots of wires to connect it all up. This amount of kit is heavy and expensive and outdated now. Technology has made a more versatile and easy to move around alternative.

The effect on technology in synthesizer on music makers.
Describe
There has been a massive advance in synthesizers. They began by looking like the bottom left picture looks. They used to take up the whole room and be far to big to move around. Whereas now they are very portable and have a lot more versatility in the sounds that they make. As well as the size of the synthesizer the price has also gone down dramatically. As you can see when you look at this Korg synth, that can be picked up for £200.
Explain the affect on music makers
The effect on music makers has been huge. The synthesizers are now compatible with computers through the USB This means that music makers can plug there synth into there computer and they can record using midi or the sounds that are on thee synthesizer. Another effect on music makers that can be explained is that know there is a jack output witch means that when playing in live situation through plugging into DI stage box into the mixer. This would never have been dreamed of when the synthesizers were as big as rooms and were only used for recording.

Showing the advance of analogue to digital technology
There have been very big advances in the field of mixing desks in both studios and live sound. This advance in technology has effected music makers in a lot of ways. As well as effecting music listeners with the sound that digital desks have being different to the sound that analogue desks have. Digital desks have a lot of features that have effected music makers. Things like how they have memory of settings. So when you have set the levels for a mix, the desk can save the levels and remember them so that there is no faffing around with getting levels.
