Functions: entertainment; communication; religious; social and political commentary; dance music; use as soundtracks to moving image or ceremonial events; performance art; identity and expression in youth culture; cult of celebrity (eg ‘X Factor’); artistic expression in avant-garde movements such as Modernism
Entertainment
Entertainment is a huge part of music in society. It is all around us. Gigs in Pubs, music festivals, busking, TV shows like X factor. The entertainment within music in society is one of the parts of the industry that people who are not overly interested in listening to music will still get engaged in, because of the visuals, ie tv screen and live performance. Being involved with these will also have a social benefit to the members of the public.

Communication
There are lots of exsampes of communication within music in society One of my favorite although it is not the most obvious is the lyrical content of songs, and whatever they might be how the message of the lyrics is communicated to the audience or the listener in a live performance or a recording. I think that this is great example because writing songs is one of the best ways to communicate messages and get your point of view across as we have seen in the past in songs by Bob Dylan witch were written as protest songs. Another example is a very obvious one and that is the communication sent to the public via radio and tv and of cores in this modern age, the internet. These three thing have such huge potential to communicate music to the public and they are used to do just that.
Eg. 1 Bob Dylan -- blowing in the wind
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in this sand?
Yes, an' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
Yes, an' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, an' how many times must a man turn his head
An' pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
An' the answer is blowin' in the wind
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, an' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, an' how many deaths will it take until he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in this sand?
Yes, an' how many times must the cannon balls fly

The song blowing I the wind is one of Bob Dylan's most well known songs. Even though when he wrote his song he was not necessarily writing i for he people out in e wars. The song was received this way tho. The song became recognized as a 'song for the troops'. The lyrics in the song as you can see above wee taken by he people in the armed forces at the outbreak of the Vietnam war and used as a song to help them through the tough times and give hem piece of mind.
When he sings this son and people listen to he lyrics and relate to the he is communicating with them through his music.
As you can now see in the video below this paragraph he is singing the song.. 'blowin in the wind' and he is entertaining the audience and the people at home watching it on he v. So in a summery he is entertaining and he is communicating his message both at the same time.

talkin bout a revolution
Talking about a revolution is a song by Tracy Chapman. It’s not one of her most famous songs. This song is a great example of a song that is a commentary on society. Because it speaks directly and communicates with the lower class people who are struggling o get their money and o get food on the table. And the message in the song is that:
‘Finally the tables are starting to turn’
The massage is that own the lower class people are going to stand up for the rights and get what they deserve. You can clearly see when our look at the lyrics below that that is what the song is about. The song has a very strong message and it is communicated through the lyrics.

Dont you know, theyre talkin 'bout a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
Dont you know, theyre talkin 'bout a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
While theyre standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time, in the unemployment lines
Sitting around, waiting for a promotion
Don't you know, they're talkin 'bout a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
Poor people gonna rise up and get their share
Poor people gonna rise up and take whats theirs
Don't you know, you better run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run, run, run
Oh, I said you better, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run
'Cause finally the tables are starting to turn, talkin 'bout a revolution
'Cause finally the tables are starting to turn, talkin 'bout a revolution, oh no

I taken the paragraph below of WIKIPEDIA and changed i into my own words.
The Columbine High School massacre was a school shooting that occurred on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, an unincorporated area of Jefferson County in the state of Colorado. In addition to the shootings, the complex and highly planned attack involved a fire bomb to divert firefighters, propane tanks converted to bombs placed in the cafeteria, 99 explosive devices, and bombs rigged in cars. The perpetrators, two senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered a total of 12 students and one teacher. They injured 21 additional people, with three others being injured while attempting to escape the school. The pair then committed suicide.

For those who wait
This is for those who wait
Another day another waiting game A little different but it's still the same I am here but where's the one I'm longing for? I'm having trouble feeling all alone Will my heart ever find a home? I want to hope but sometimes I just don't know I know I'm not the only one So we sing a lullaby To the lonely hearts tonight Let it set your heart on fire Let it set you free When you're fighting to believe In a love that you can't see Just know there is a purpose For those who wait I want to open up my eyes I know that all I need is time I'm growing stronger every single day God, I'm gonna leave them to You now Letting go all of my fear and doubt I can't do this on my own, so I'll give You control I know I'm not the only one So we sing a lullaby To the lonely hearts tonight Let it set your heart on fire Let it set you free When you're fighting to believe In a love that you can't see Just know there is a purpose For those who wait The pressure makes us stronger The struggle makes us hunger The hard lessons make the difference The pressure makes us stronger The struggle makes us hunger The hard lessons make the difference And the difference makes it worth it So we sing a lullaby To the lonely hearts tonight Let it set your heart on fire Let it set you free When you're fighting to believe In a love that you can't see Just know there is a purpose For those who wait Let it set your heart on fire This is for those who wait Read more: Fireflight - For Those Who Wait Lyrics | MetroLyrics |
